Critical First Aid Steps for Drowning Incidents

As summer brings increased swimming, beach trips, and water activities, the risk of drowning becomes ever-present. Drowning can occur suddenly with life-threatening consequences if not managed properly. These essential first aid procedures can save lives and prevent complications.

1. Ensure Safety Before Rescue

  • Do not enter the water if you're not a trained swimmer or rescuer

  • Immediately call emergency services (115) and alert others

  • Use flotation devices, ropes, or long objects to reach the victim if possible

2. Secure the Victim On Land

  • Carefully bring the victim to shore while supporting the head/neck

  • Position the victim flat on a firm, dry surface

3. Assess Responsiveness and Breathing

  • Shout and gently shake the shoulders to check consciousness

  • Look for chest movements to confirm breathing:

    • If NOT breathing: Begin CPR immediately

    • If breathing but unconscious: Place in recovery position

4. Perform CPR
For adults/children (over 1 year):

  1. Chest compressions (30 times):

    • Heel of hand on lower half of breastbone

    • 5-6 cm depth at 100-120 compressions/minute

  2. Rescue breaths (2 times):

    • Tilt head, pinch nose, give 1-second breaths

For infants (under 1 year):

  • Use two fingers for compressions (4 cm depth)

  • Maintain 30:2 compression-to-breath ratio

5. Post-Resuscitation Care

  • Maintain recovery position for conscious victims

  • Prevent hypothermia with dry coverings

  • Seek medical attention even if recovery appears complete

6. Vital Reminders

  • Never attempt to drain water from lungs (inversion technique is dangerous)

  • Continue CPR until medical professionals take over

  • Prevention measures:

    • Learn swimming and water rescue skills

    • Always wear life jackets during boating

    • Avoid swimming in hazardous areas

Water safety knowledge is particularly crucial during summer months. By learning these first response techniques, you can make the difference between life and death in drowning emergencies.
